Spellings and Word Lists


Government expectations for spelling are high. Therefore all children will be exposed to the statutory spellings and statutory rules. If your child finds spelling particularly difficult, he/she will still be exposed to the statutory requirements but extra spelling lists may be sent home of the high frequency words and more focus will be given in class to the basics.

KS1 Phonic knowledge

Children use their knowledge of phonics to help with reading. Once pupils have learnt more than one way of spelling particular sounds they are encouraged to consciously learn the word groups that follow a particular spelling pattern.

KS2 Statutory spellings

The word-lists for years 3 and 4 and years 5 and 6 are statutory. The lists are a mixture of words pupils frequently use in their writing and those which they often misspell. Some of the listed words may be thought of as quite challenging but are taught gradually over four years.

KS2 Spelling Rules

In KS2 children are also taught spelling rules. The spelling lists with the statutory rules are sent home to practise. However, it must be noted that it is the rules that are statutory and not the actual words. Sometimes the words being sent home to practise, may seem a little obscure but the words sent home will follow the rule that has been introduced. It is important that the children see how the word follows the rule.

Tips for helping with spelling homework:

  • Discuss the spelling rule and ensure that your child can read the word before attempting to spell it.
  • Use the Look, say, cover, write, check method.
  • Talk through the meaning of the word and try putting a few of the words into sentences. This can be done verbally.
  • Short bursts of daily practice are better than one long session.
  • Make spelling fun. Use as many different spelling strategies as possible. Look on the I Learn videos for ideas (coming soon).
  • Always practise spellings using joined handwriting.

Children are assessed in spelling through a variety of ways:

  • spelling tests
  • in dictated sentences
  • use of spelling in their own writing.
