Aims of the New Curriculum:

That all children know, understand and identify:

  • Significant places in the world, describing their physical and human characteristics and how they can change over time.
  • Through fieldwork collect and analyse a range of data, communicating any similarities and differences.
  • Interpret maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS). 

Key Stage 1 coverage:

Yr1: Compare a British seaside with an urban town e.g. through maps, aerial photographs, historical accounts and scale models. To identify the features of the sea side in the past and make comparisons with the sea side today. Compare and contrast the foods, culture, landscapes and animals of Africa, the Polar Regions and UK.

Yr2: Identify the physical and human features of our local area using maps, aerial photographs and the internet. Research the countries within the UK. Investigate an area of Mexico on a world map, learning the continents and oceans. Recognising the main landmarks and identifying the weather, seasonal change and commenting on their effect on people.

Key Stage 2 coverage

Yr3: Use fieldwork to observe, measure, record and present the human and physical features of the local area and creating maps using Ordnance survey symbols and four figure grid references.
Learn about the environmental impact of the different stages involved in food production. Explore the different reasons why foods are imported and exported and learn about trade.
Identify the position and significance of latitude, longitude, equator, the hemispheres, the tropics and Circles.

Yr4: Identify the position and significance of the prime/Green meridian and time zones.
Measure the local weather and discuss the climate, biomes, vegetation belts and seasons.
Investigate non-renewable fossil fuels to produce energy and the potential problems this may cause.

Yr5: use fieldwork to observe, measure and record the human and physical features in the local area, using a range of methods, including sketch maps and plans.
To describe and understand key aspects of physical geography, including: climate zones, biomes and vegetation belts and human geography, types of settlements and land use, and economic activity. To focus on the state of Alaska, examining the weather and climate and explore issues around the Trans-Alaska pipeline.
Explore how the water cycle works, focusing on local, UK, European and world rivers.

Yr6: Develop enquiry skills through creating maps using Ordnance survey symbols and six figure grid references.
Study human and physical geography of California, North America.
Research natural disasters around the world caused by extreme weather, including flooding, tornadoes, tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes and draughts.
