Autumn 2020 – updated January 2021 to reflect changes in Government guidance

This document outlines Holly Lodge’s contingency plans for remote learning, should children need to access if self-isolating or a for a further partial or full lockdown.  It distinguishes 4 stages depending on circumstances:

  • Stage 1 Child is well but not able to be in school, e.g. awaiting test results (day 1 and 2)
  • Stage 2 Child is at home self-isolating due to self or family member testing positive.
  • Stage 3 Whole class/year group bubble is close and all at  home self-isolating
  • Stage 4. School is closed for all pupils except key workers and vulnerable children

These will be detailed further below.

To enable teaching and learning to continue as effectively as possible, we aim to ensure:

  • there is alignment as far as possible between face-to-face and remote education;
  • we communicate regularly with families through weekly newsletters, Marvellous Me (Yr 1-6), Seesaw and pre-recorded videos. Wellbeing calls will also be made to families.

What remote learning can I expect from Holly Lodge Primary Academy?

Throughout 2020 Holly Lodge provided remote learning which has been well-received by the parent community, consisting of a mixture of online and practical activities. The recent parent survey has confirmed that this is the model which suits most family situations. Not all families have free, unlimited access to technology.  Following feedback from families, the remote learning will be supplemented with pre-recorded videos, instruction and activities from class teachers using the online platform of Seesaw.  Parents have also told us that they would like clearer expectations of tasks and deadlines for completion to help motivate the children and feedback. Reception classes will use Tapestry. Learning will reflect schemes of work in school as far as possible and will be supplemented high quality resources including:

If families need printed resources, a pickup service will be arranged in line with any PHE Guidance at the time. Please contact the school office if you do not have access to technology or limited or no access to the  internet.  We may be able to support.

There will be an expectation that learning is completed by children and non-engagement will be followed up. Please contact the school if you have any concerns or need support to help your child; the wellbeing of all our families is important to us and we recognise that each family circumstance is different.

Tips for Parents 

Planned learning with follow-up activities will take, broadly, 3- 4 hours each day depending on the age of your child.  DO plan this flexibly around your day at home.

 The following are proven ways you can do this to have the greatest impact on learning and progress:

  • DO set a clear routine for your child using the learning set
  • DO talk to your child about what they know already relating to any new learning
  • DO encourage them to be independent - children learn most through their mistakes
  • DO replay short video clips to help children understand an input
  • If you can find time, DO talk to your child during the day about what they found challenging and what helped them with their work - it will make a big difference
  • DO keep learning sessions in short manageable chunks
  • DO stop and start again if something is proving a challenge or they need thinking time
  • DO allow your child to copy modelled examples before having a go on their own
  • If you are unable to print, complete learning on paper or in an exercise book. This should be photographed and uploaded to See Saw.

If your child has remote contact with friends, DO let them chat about their learning (supervising social media carefully of course!)

Communication and Feedback

Our primary platform to support remote learning is the school website and Seesaw for Years 1-6 and Tapestry for Reception children. Where appropriate, there will be short recorded inputs from class teachers and instructions for completion.

 At Stage 1

  • Feedback on your child’s learning will be given on their return to school

At Stages 2-4

  • Please ensure that you check the platform each day.
  • Feedback on your child’s learning will be provided via Marvellous Me or See Saw.
  • Feedback will take a number of different forms:

-          answers for self-marking;

-          an acknowledgement e.g. a “like”; individual or class MM message;

-          we may choose key pieces for in-depth feedback;

-          we may not give direct feedback but adapt the following day’s learning in light of our assessment.

Please be aware that teachers may be teaching a full day in class, as well as providing home learning and therefore may not always be able to give full or immediate feedback.  We aim to respond within 2 days.

  • Participation and learning on Times Table Rockstarswill continue to be monitored
  • We undertake to contact each family on a fortnightly basis where possible and, in some cases, more frequently.

At Stages 3 and 4, there will be short recorded inputs from class teachers available, and as appropriate at Stage 2.

At stage 4 there will also be  additional contact by recorded video/assemblies; phone calls and live class catch ups where possible. All families are expected to adhere to the Kite family code of conduct.

As always, the wellbeing of our children and families is paramount, so please contact the school office if you have any concerns or need the learning adapted due to limits of technology.

Circumstance

Remote learning

Stage 1:

My child is absent from school but well.  E.g.  Awaiting test results/required to isolate.

The rest of their school bubble are attending school as normal.

This becomes a Stage 2 from the third day of absence or on receipt of a positive test result.

This will be provided on the school website under the home learning tab:     ‘Get-going’– this will be revisionary/quiz-type for maths and English

  • Maths activity (provided)
  • English activity (provided)
  • Reading, (Reading book)
  • Spelling (provided)
  • Topic-related learning (provided)
  • 30 minutes of activity/exercise

Stage 2:

My child is absent because they, another sibling or household member- have had a positive test result OR

Imposed self-isolation.

 

The rest of their school bubble may be attending school and being taught as normal.

This will be communicated via Seesaw from day 3 of absence.

Where possible it will be aligned with learning taking place in school and will mirror or follow on from the class learning. You may be sent a link to videos, screens shared with children in class and/or worksheets where appropriate.

  • Maths lesson set  (40 -60 mins)
  • English task  set (40 -60mins
  • Phonics or spelling task set (20 mins)
  • Time Table Rockstars/Numbots (20 mins)
  • Topic task(s) set from 1 or 2 subject areas mirroring learning from in school where possible (30- 60 mins)
  • Daily reading at home  (20 minutes minimum)
  • Physical exercise (30 mins)

1:1 support

if your child receives 1:1 support and they are isolating, you will be contacted separately for individual support.

 

The expectation for completion dates and requirements to submit learning for feedback will be indicated.

Stage 3:

My child’s whole bubble is not permitted to attend school because they, or other members of their bubble, have tested positive for Covid-19.

 

 

 

Activities/videos will be uploaded via Seesaw following learning that had been planned for the class at that time.

  • Maths lesson set (40 mins –  -60mins)
  • English task set (40 mins – 60mins)
  • Phonics or spelling task  set (20 mins)
  • Time Table Rockstars/Numbots (20 mins)
  • Topic task(s)  set from 1 or 2 subject areas mirroring learning from in school where possible (30 mins – 60mins)
  • Daily reading at home  (20 minutes minimum)
  • Physical exercise (30 mins)

1:1 support

if your child receives 1:1 support, you will be contacted separately for individual support.

 

The expectation for completion dates and requirements to submit learning for feedback will be indicated.

Stage 4

We enter another ‘lockdown’ with total school closure.

As Stage 3 but with a key-worker and vulnerable provision (dependent upon government guidance). Learning at school will be aligned with remote learning where possible.  It may be necessary to make adaptations to the use curriculum offered in school.

Government guidelines for remote learning are

KS1 3 hours minimum

KS2 4 hours minimum
